Some types of HID bulbs can develop a dimming effect at the end of their life when they are exhausted. This leads to a large increase in ballast heat. This phenomenon practically does not occur with HPS bulbs, but is more common with MH bulb. When the internal temperature rises above the safety limit, the thermal switch automatically activates and disconnects the ballast from the mains to reduce damage to the electrical components connected to the bulb. For indoor installations with MH bulb, we definitely recommend the use of units with thermal protection.

A very high starting current is required to start sodium bulbs (HPS). This can only be achieved with a ballast.

HORTI silencers are thermally protected, so to speak, they turn off if they overheat.
